Finnish volunteer fighter jailed in Russia amid Oleshky crisis

A Finnish volunteer fighter from Ukraine has been jailed in Russia, while occupied Oleshky faces severe shortages of food and basic utilities.
A man from Helsinki who fought as a volunteer with Ukrainian forces has been detained and imprisoned in Russia after traveling to Africa. According to Helsingin Sanomat, Russian authorities charged him with acting as a mercenary, marking the first recorded instance of a Finnish foreign fighter being jailed by Moscow.
Concurrently, reports from the Russian-occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky highlight a worsening humanitarian emergency. Residents in the southern town, which has been under Russian military control since 2022, face severe shortages of essential supplies. Local accounts indicate that the lack of food, electricity, clean water, and gas has forced some inhabitants to eat wild vegetation to survive.
