Finnish foreign policy experts warn that historical failures to heed security warnings about Russia will continue to weigh on future bilateral ties between Helsinki and Moscow.

Finnish foreign policy experts have offered a grim assessment of historical relations between Helsinki and Moscow, arguing that past decision-makers consistently overlooked crucial warning signs regarding Russia's authoritarian shift.

The re-evaluation comes as key anniversaries approach, including the birthday of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the murder of investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya. Politkovskaya, who uncovered human rights violations in Chechnya, was assassinated in 2006 in an event that deeply impacted the Finnish public.

Analysts contend that political leaders in Helsinki repeatedly failed to respond to emerging security risks in the decades following the killing. Looking ahead, policy specialists offer a pessimistic forecast for future bilateral relations, maintaining that early indicators of Moscow's trajectory were systematically disregarded.
