The EU has extended sanctions on Russia following a border-area missile strike, even as fighting persists despite reported energy target agreements.

The European Union has officially extended sanctions against Russia following a missile attack on a train near the Ukrainian-Polish border. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot condemned the strike, characterising it as an effort to intimidate European partners and sow internal political division.

The diplomatic measure comes despite claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that Kyiv and Moscow had reached an agreement to refrain from striking energy infrastructure. However, intense fighting continues on the ground. Shelling in Ukraine's Kherson region resulted in two fatalities and 14 injuries, while drone strikes in Russia's Belgorod region and the coastal city of Sochi left seven people wounded.

Meanwhile, domestic political shifts continued in Kyiv, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a presidential decree removing the country's prosecutor general from office.
