EU extends Russia sanctions after removing two oligarchs from blacklist

EU member states extended sanctions against nearly 3,000 Russian targets after agreeing to remove oligarchs Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman.
European Union member states have resolved a diplomatic impasse, agreeing to extend sanctions targeting nearly 3,000 Russian individuals and entities associated with the invasion of Ukraine.
To reach the required unanimous agreement and prevent restrictions from automatically expiring, diplomats accepted demands backed by France, Slovakia, and Luxembourg. Under the compromise, steel magnate Alisher Usmanov and financier Mikhail Fridman were removed from the travel ban and asset freeze lists.
Concurrently, EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg approved a major economic sanctions package aimed at curbing Moscow's war effort. European officials framed the measures as a critical reinforcement of support for Kyiv.
