EU extends Russian sanctions following compromise on oligarch exemptions

EU member states extended sanctions against nearly 3,000 Russian targets after agreeing to remove two high-profile oligarchs from the blacklist.
European Union member states have reached an agreement to prolong individual sanctions against nearly 3,000 Russian targets linked to the war in Ukraine.
The extension was initially delayed when several member states, including France, Slovakia, and Luxembourg, pushed to remove specific figures from the penal list. Under the final compromise required to maintain unanimity across the 27-nation bloc, steel tycoon Alisher Usmanov and financier Mikhail Fridman were removed from the sanctions registry, allowing restrictions on the remaining individuals and entities to move forward.
Additionally, EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg formally approved a fresh package of sanctions designed to tighten controls on Russia's military-industrial supply chains and financial sector.
