EU extends Russia sanctions after compromise on delisting oligarchs

EU member states extended sanctions against nearly 3,000 Russian entities and individuals following a compromise to remove two prominent oligarchs from the blacklist.
European Union member states have agreed to prolong punitive measures against nearly 3,000 Russian individuals and entities linked to the war in Ukraine. The agreement followed intense diplomatic negotiations and a brief delay caused by disagreements over individual listings.
To secure the necessary unanimity, diplomats accepted requests supported by France, Slovakia, and Luxembourg to remove steel magnate Alisher Usmanov and financier Mikhail Fridman from the asset freeze and travel ban lists. Concurrently, EU foreign ministers convened in Luxembourg to approve a comprehensive new sanctions package targeting Russia's war economy.
