Discrepancies remain over Ceuta migration surge as fatalities rise

Spanish central and local authorities remain divided over migrant entry figures in Ceuta, as local officials report 88 deaths and political fallout continues in Madrid.
Tensions remain high in Ceuta following a severe migrant influx into the Spanish enclave. Regional president Juan Jesús Vivas stated that up to 80,000 individuals crossed the border, whereas central government officials insist only 2,500 migrants remain, including around 500 unaccompanied minors. Local authorities previously estimated that 6,000 migrants remained in the city.
The human toll continues to mount, with local officials reporting up to 88 deaths related to the Tarajal breakwater crossing. In response, the Guardia Civil opened a specialized office to help families locate missing relatives.
In Madrid, the crisis triggered political friction. A National Security Department communications officer was dismissed for releasing unapproved reports claiming 49,000 entries. Disagreements also persist between Spain’s Interior and Defense ministries over the military's role in detaining and deporting migrants.
