Disagreements deepen over Ceuta migrant numbers as Madrid faces political fallout

Conflicting migrant statistics in Ceuta cause administrative strain while political fallout triggers inter-ministerial tensions and official dismissals in Madrid.
Tensions and conflicting data persist between Spain's central government and local authorities in Ceuta following a recent border surge. Regional officials estimate that tens of thousands crossed into the enclave, leaving around 6,000 remaining, whereas central government representatives report only 2,500 remaining migrants, including approximately 500 unaccompanied minors.
Amid ongoing humanitarian efforts, local reports indicate up to 88 fatalities connected to the breakwater crossing. To assist families, the Guardia Civil established a specialized office and contact service to identify victims and trace missing persons.
In Madrid, political fallout has escalated. A National Security Department communications official was dismissed over an unauthorized public alert regarding entry figures. Disagreements have also surfaced between the Interior and Defense ministries regarding the military's role in detaining and deporting migrants.
