Disagreements deepen over Ceuta border crisis figures and response

Spain's central and local authorities remain split over migrant counts and casualties in Ceuta following a major border crossing attempt.
Six days after a mass border crossing attempt at El Tarajal, Spanish authorities remain split over the scale and impact of the crisis in Ceuta. Central government representatives state that 2,500 migrants, including 500 unaccompanied minors, currently remain in the autonomous city. However, local authorities estimate 6,000 remaining individuals and suggest overall entry attempts reached up to 80,000.
Humanitarian concerns are growing alongside rising casualty reports. Local officials report up to 88 fatalities, prompting the Guardia Civil to establish a specialized missing persons office. Reports also indicate military personnel have been detaining groups near the perimeter for immediate return.
The crisis has generated internal political friction in Madrid, deepening fractures between the Interior and Defense departments. Additionally, the central administration dismissed a National Security Department staff member over a "loss of trust" following the publication of an unverified alert.
