Croatian lawmakers debate hazardous waste dumping in Lika, while Malta's Fenech trial continues and a global study highlights rising news avoidance in Croatia.

Croatia's parliament continued an extraordinary session convened by President Zoran Milanović following reports of illegal hazardous waste disposal in the Lika region. The environmental controversy prompted the opposition Social Democratic Party to launch a no-confidence initiative against the governing coalition led by the Croatian Democratic Union and the Homeland Movement.

In Valletta, proceedings continued in the trial of businessman Yorgen Fenech, who stands accused of orchestrating the 2017 car bomb assassination of investigative reporter Daphne Caruana Galizia. Jurors heard testimony from her son regarding anti-corruption inquiries she pursued prior to her death.

Meanwhile, findings published from the Reuters Institute's Digital News Report 2026 revealed that 63 percent of survey participants in Croatia regularly or occasionally avoid news coverage, placing the country alongside Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey among the highest globally.
