The incident took place on the evening of August 1, at the Balzi Rossi restaurant, an upscale venue situated inside the  Stalinist skyscraper on Kudrinskaya Square in central Moscow, near the Barrikadnaya metro station.

The explosion occurred around 7:55 PM local time, instantly shattering glass facades and shaking the ground floor of the  building.  At the time of the incident, the restaurant had been completely closed to the public for a private function. Signs posted at the main entrance indicated that access to the premises was restricted due to a private banquet.

Emergency responders, bomb squad technicians, and heavy security units descended upon the area within minutes, cordoning off adjacent streets as speculation mounted regarding the cause and target of the blast.

Initial chaos erupted inside and around the venue. Eyewitnesses reported seeing multiple ambulances, fire engines, and emergency medical personnel racing to the scene to treat victims on the pavement. Rescue workers worked under high-security protocols, establishing a wide perimeter and halting traffic along key arteries in central Moscow.

According to preliminary updates from emergency services and reporting by independent outlets, at least three people were killed instantly. Over twenty others suffered varying degrees of trauma, including shrapnel wounds, severe burns, and blast injuries. Medical personnel attempted on-site resuscitation for several critically injured individuals before transferring them to Moscow’s emergency trauma centers.

Official Version: An Improvised Explosive Device at the Threshold

While early reports from Russian state-aligned media suggested a catastrophic gas cylinder leak in the kitchen, staff and first responders quickly disputed that theory, confirming that the kitchen facilities remained intact. Subsequently, official statements issued by Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee acknowledged that an improvised explosive device had been detonated .

As the investigation unfolded into the late hours of August 1, Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee released an official assessment of the cause of the disaster. Authorities stated that an unidentified woman attempted to gain entry into Balzi Rossi while carrying a concealed improvised explosive device inside a bag or container.

According to the official narrative, security personnel stationed at the restaurant's entrance intercepted the woman as she tried to bypass the entry check. A physical confrontation or rapid escalation took place at the doorway, triggering the detonation of the explosive charge.

The blast killed the perpetrator instantly, alongside the security guard who had stopped her at the threshold. A third victim, identified as a patron or staff member positioned near the entrance area, also died from the impact.

A VIP Gathering: The Presence of the Russian Military Elite

Balzi Rossi has long been known as a sanctuary of luxury in Moscow, regularly frequented by politicians, oligarchs, media personalities, and high-ranking security officials. However, on the night of August 1, the demographic inside was distinctly military.

The blast on August 1,occurred during a strictly closed event, which independent investigative sources and eyewitnesses identified as a birthday celebration for high-ranking Russian military commanders, central to which was Colonel General Alexander Chaiko.

Eyewitness accounts compiled by investigative outlets highlighted an unusually heavy security presence around the Kudrinskaya Square skyscraper even prior to the explosion. Multiple vehicles displaying black military license plates—typically reserved for the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and high-level defense agencies—were parked along the perimeter. Additionally, a specialized transport vehicle belonging to the National Guard of Russia (Rosgvardia) was observed stationed nearby.

Insiders confirmed that the restaurant was hosting an exclusive celebration attended by senior officers from the defense structure. Prominent Russian journalist Oleg Kashin and independent monitoring groups noted that the private event was held to celebrate the birthday of Colonel General Alexander Chaiko, a high-profile commander within the Russian military hierarchy.

Open sources say that Chaiko”'s birthday is July 27and he turns 55 this year.

Who is General Alexander Chaiko?

Colonel General Alexander  Chaiko is one of the most prominent figures in modern Russian military leadership.  He rose steadily through the ranks of the Russian Ground Forces. Serving as the chief of staff of the Russian forces in Syria in 2015 and later assuming overall command of the Russian military contingent there between 2019 and 2020, he directed major offensive operations in Idlib and eastern Syria. For his service in the Syrian campaign, Chaiko was awarded the country’s highest military honor, the title of Hero of the Russian Federation, by executive decree.

In late 2021, Chaiko was appointed Commander of the Eastern Military District, placing him in control of extensive combat units and logistics bases across Russia’s Far East. This position positioned him as a central planner in the military escalations preceding the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Role in the Invasion of Ukraine and War Crime Allegations

During the opening phases of the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, General Chaiko was tasked with leading the Russian troops advancing along the northern axis toward Kyiv. Under his direct command, forces from the Eastern Military District crossed from Belarus into the Kyiv region, occupying key locations such as Hostomel, Bucha, Irpin, and Borodyanka.

Following the withdrawal of Russian forces from the Kyiv region in late March 2022, international investigators, human rights organizations, and Ukrainian prosecutors documented widespread atrocities committed against civilians in towns under Chaiko’s operational responsibility. These included mass executions, illegal detentions, torture, and widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure.

Because of his direct command role during the operations around Kyiv and Bucha, Chaiko was placed under comprehensive sanctions by Ukraine, the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and several other partner nations. Human rights organizations have named him in multiple legal dockets presented to international judicial bodies for command responsibility regarding war crimes.

Chaiko’s career subsequently experienced periods of internal turbulence within the Russian Ministry of Defense. Following tactical setbacks and the retreat from northern Ukraine, he was temporarily reassigned back to Syria in late 2022 to oversee Russian garrisons there, before returning to high-level strategic positions within the Russian general staff structures.

Claims regarding the nature of the reception and the list of its participants have not yet been officially confirmed by the Russian authorities.
