French Constitutional Council approves end-of-life bill while striking down youth social media ban
France's Constitutional Council validated key end-of-life legislation with reservations while striking down a proposed social media ban for minors under 15.
France's Constitutional Council has approved landmark end-of-life legislation while invalidating a proposed ban on social media for minors under 15 years old.
The high court declared the assisted dying bill constitutional, issuing three interpretative reservations, notably guaranteeing a conscience clause for private and religious healthcare institutions. French President Emmanuel Macron praised the ruling, while lawmakers noted the decision clears the way for the law's official promulgation.
Conversely, the council struck down Article 1 of the digital safety bill, ruling that a general prohibition on social media access for under-15s disproportionately restricted public liberties. The ruling effectively nullifies a key presidential initiative. Additionally, the court validated provisions within an emergency agricultural law submitted during the same legislative session.
