Polish president returns to Warsaw as Constitutional Tribunal crisis deepens
Polish President Karol Nawrocki cut short his trip to Senegal after police entered the Constitutional Tribunal, where suspended leaders disputed their removal.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki urgently cut short his official trip to Senegal on October 30, turning his plane back to Warsaw following escalating tensions at the Constitutional Tribunal.
Nawrocki returned after police entered the tribunal's grounds and senior judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska suspended the court's president, Bogdan Święczkowski, and vice-president, Bartłomiej Sochański, for one month. The ousted leadership disputed the legality of the move, describing the actions as a state coup.
Upon his arrival, President Nawrocki met with Supreme Court First President Zbigniew Kapiński to discuss the crisis. Meanwhile, the U.S. ambassador to Poland remarked that "confrontation is the last thing Poland needs." A general assembly of the tribunal's judges has been scheduled for November 3 to address the leadership dispute.
