Czech Republic sees sharp rise in child abuse cases as reforms loom
Czech authorities recorded a record surge in child abuse and neglect cases, prompting government proposals to expedite judicial protective measures.
Czech authorities recorded a record surge in child abuse, neglect, and exploitation cases, exceeding 10,000 affected children in annual statistics. Welfare services also removed 3,616 children from their families last year, an increase of 300 year-on-year.
Child rights experts warn that official numbers reveal only a fraction of the problem, attributing the rise to either societal instability or increased public vigilance. Advocacy organizations emphasized that missing operational guidelines and a lack of specialized assistance cause preventable family separations.
In response, the Czech government is evaluating a Ministry of Justice proposal allowing courts to expedite protective measures for endangered children instead of waiting for expert evaluations. Separately, the child ombudsman highlighted systemic gaps and opposed nationwide school mobile phone bans.
