EU extends Russia sanctions as regional strikes and diplomatic efforts continue
The European Union has extended sanctions on Russia following strikes near the Polish border, while U.S. President Donald Trump claims a agreement on energy targets.
European Union leaders have extended existing sanctions against Russia as hostilities persist across the region. The decision coincides with joint statements from EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who condemned a Russian military strike targeting a train near the Ukrainian-Polish border, describing it as an attempt to divide and intimidate European partners.
On the ground, local authorities reported two deaths and 14 injuries from Russian shelling in Ukraine's Kherson region. Meanwhile, Ukrainian drone strikes in Sochi and Russia's Belgorod region reportedly left seven people wounded.
In diplomatic developments, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Moscow and Kyiv reached an understanding to halt strikes on energy infrastructure. Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree officially dismissing the country's prosecutor general.
