Tensions persist in Portadown as counter-protesters block Orange Order parade
A stand-off continues in Portadown after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road, stopping a contentious Orange Order parade despite a High Court ruling.
Stand-off and heightened security persist in Portadown after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road, preventing an Orange Order parade from proceeding.
The Belfast High Court had ruled early Sunday to uphold a Parades Commission determination allowing 35 members of the Protestant organization to conduct a limited, silent march along the route. It was set to be the first permitted procession along the historic flashpoint since the late 1990s.
However, mass demonstrations on the predominantly nationalist road forced law enforcement officers to halt the marchers near Drumcree Church to prevent potential disorder. Key political figures, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, joined the crowds opposing the march. The Orange Order subsequently entered discussions regarding the situation as demonstrators remained stationed along the route.
