Cold War KGB operations targeted former Finnish prime minister, scholar reveals
Political science scholar Alpo Rusi has detailed Soviet KGB operations aimed at influencing former Finnish Prime Minister Keijo Liinamaa in the late 1970s.
Political science scholar Alpo Rusi has published new details regarding Soviet intelligence operations aimed at Finnish political leaders during the late Cold War. Writing in a column for Iltalehti, Rusi highlighted covert tactics used against Keijo Liinamaa, who served as Finland's national conciliator and prime minister prior to his death in December 1980.
According to Rusi, KGB operatives attempted to manipulate industrial labor market negotiations overseen by Liinamaa to create domestic political instability. These operations aimed to shape Finland's political landscape during the final years of President Urho Kekkonen's presidency. Before his death, Liinamaa reported receiving direct threats and pressure from Soviet agents to diplomatic contacts, offering further insight into foreign interference in Finnish domestic affairs.
