Opposition maintains lead in Swedish vote count as Sweden Democrats drop
The left-leaning opposition maintains a narrow lead in Swedish vote tallies as the Sweden Democrats register their first national parliamentary decline.
Sweden's vote counting following the general election shows the left-leaning opposition maintaining a narrow lead of 176 seats to the governing coalition's 173. Public broadcaster SVT projects an opposition victory, prompting the Social Democrats to demand Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's resignation.
The right-wing Sweden Democrats suffered their first parliamentary vote decline, falling to 17.5 percent from 20.5 percent in 2022 due to voter losses to the Moderates and younger demographics. Party official Tobias Andersson described the outcome as concerning. However, party leader Jimmie Åkesson contested assertions of defeat, stating "there is no obvious winner in this election" while maintaining demands for ministerial posts in any prospective right-leaning cabinet. Locally, the party achieved a landslide in Färgelanda, securing 39 percent of the vote following municipal school disputes.
