French government convenes crisis cell as high school protests intensify
France has established an interministerial crisis unit after high school blockades led to arson, transit disruptions, and the temporary closure of up to 500 schools nationwide.
French authorities convened an interministerial crisis unit as nationwide high school blockades led to widespread violence and property damage. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu called cabinet ministers to the emergency meeting at the Interior Ministry following serious disruptions.
Education Minister Édouard Geffray announced that in-person classes will be suspended for 400 to 500 secondary schools on Monday, shifting to remote instruction over safety risks. Officials reported that 24 schools suffered vandalism or arson, including a major fire at Nelson Mandela High School in Nantes. Public transit in Marseille and Strasbourg was also disrupted after attacks on vehicles and staff.
The escalation precedes a scheduled national strike by education unions and student groups demanding increased resources and teacher replacements.
