Controversial Orange Order parade in Portadown halted by counter-protest
Thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road in Portadown, preventing a permitted Orange Order parade from proceeding following a High Court ruling.
A controversial Orange Order parade in Portadown, Northern Ireland, was halted on Sunday after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road. The impasse occurred despite an early-morning High Court ruling that upheld a Parades Commission decision permitting 35 marchers to pass along the predominantly nationalist thoroughfare between 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
The planned procession from Drumcree Church was scheduled to be the first along the route since 1998, a historic flashpoint during the Troubles. However, the marchers did not depart as demonstrators occupied the road. Police and community leaders held discussions while political parties at Stormont remained deeply divided over the standoff, with unionists citing judicial authority and nationalists framing the march as sectarian intimidation.
