German investigators link Russian intelligence to airport drone plot
German investigators have linked Russia's GRU intelligence service to a failed drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport, amid broader warnings over state-sponsored hybrid warfare.
German law enforcement authorities have linked Russia's military intelligence agency, the GRU, to a failed August drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport. According to investigative reports, a Russian national tied to the agency organized logistics for an explosive device placed near Ukrainian cargo aircraft, which failed to detonate due to a faulty trigger.
The incident forms part of a wider pattern of suspected state-sponsored hybrid warfare across Germany. Regional police services are currently investigating more than 100 incidents involving suspected foreign intervention, ranging from unauthorized drone flights over military installations to infrastructure sabotage and online disinformation campaigns. Additionally, domestic intelligence agencies have raised concerns that foreign actors may have hidden covert weapons caches within German territory to facilitate future sabotage operations aimed at destabilizing democratic institutions.
