Tensions rise in Strait of Hormuz as energy prices surge following tanker attack
Global energy prices jumped after a Saudi tanker was hit near the Strait of Hormuz, as Washington and Tehran traded military warnings and strategic claims.
Global crude and natural gas prices have spiked following renewed military tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where a Saudi oil tanker was reportedly struck by three projectiles before crew members extinguished an onboard fire.
U.S. President Donald Trump described Iran as a "failed state" and warned of further military actions while asserting that the strategic shipping route remains open. Conversely, Iranian hardliners are reportedly attempting to leverage their position in the waterway to push for the full implementation of a 14-point memorandum signed in June, seeking an end to international sanctions and the unfreezing of foreign assets.
Meanwhile, Iranian military officials rejected Washington's claims that recent U.S. airstrikes on Larak Island thwarted Tehran's naval minelaying operations, dismissing the American narrative as "pure fantasy."
