Eastern German election campaigns fuel debates on education and cultural funding
Rising far-right sentiment among students and controversial AfD culture policies highlight mounting political tensions ahead of eastern German elections.
Tensions over education, culture, and regional identity are escalating in eastern Germany ahead of upcoming state elections. Teachers in eastern regions report a visible rise in far-right behavior among students, including the use of banned symbols and songs. To address gaps in historical awareness, federal commissioner Evelyn Zupke called for mandatory school visits to former East German memorial sites.
Political debates surrounding regional identity are also expanding into cultural policy. In Saxony-Anhalt, the Alternative for Germany party proposed stripping public funding from cultural institutions and Holocaust memorials it considers "anti-German." Concurrently, administrative pressure on education systems persists across regions, with official data revealing that nearly 400 public school teachers in Berlin have been on sick leave for over a year.
