Iran and Oman finalize maritime corridor coordinates in Strait of Hormuz
Iran and Oman have agreed on coordinates for a Strait of Hormuz shipping route, though Tehran warns safe passage remains tied to broader regional conditions.
Iran and Oman have agreed on the geographical coordinates for a commercial maritime transit route through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian foreign ministry officials.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated that the bilateral framework is entering its "final stages," though he cautioned that the agreement itself cannot ensure maritime security without broader regional de-escalation and an absence of external interference. Concurrently, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi noted that fully reopening the strategic chokepoint remains "subject to other conditions," including demands related to compensation for war damages.
The diplomatic efforts coincide with persistent security risks in surrounding waters. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported two explosions near a commercial oil tanker navigating off the coast of Oman. Maritime authorities confirmed the vessel and crew were unharmed, with no environmental damage detected.
