Middle East maritime tensions escalate amid stalled US-Iran talks
Middle East maritime corridors remain volatile as negotiations between Washington and Tehran over the Strait of Hormuz stall amid continuing regional strikes.
Tensions across strategic Middle Eastern waterways remain severe as diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran stay deadlocked. Tehran continues to condition the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on comprehensive sanctions relief, the unfreezing of foreign assets, and an end to military operations against allied militias. In response, US President Donald Trump claimed American forces retain operational control over the strait while expressing distrust of Iranian leadership.
Simultaneously, maritime hostilities are intensifying across regional transit routes. Houthi forces launched strikes near the Bab el-Mandeb strait and the port of Al Makha, causing merchant sailor casualties. In the Gulf of Oman, US forces targeted the container vessel Vela Nova for allegedly violating maritime restrictions. Meanwhile, diplomatic friction emerged between Washington and Israel after Israeli officials ruled out withdrawals from southern Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza.
