Middle East maritime tensions rise as Strait of Hormuz standoff continues
Talks over the Strait of Hormuz remain stalled between the US and Iran as maritime attacks escalate across the Bab el-Mandeb and Gulf waterways.
Diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran remain deadlocked as Iran continues to condition the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on US compliance with the June memorandum, including sanctions relief and the release of frozen foreign assets. US President Donald Trump stated that American forces maintain control over the passage, expressing distrust toward Iranian leadership.
Maritime security throughout regional waterways has deteriorated further. US forces struck the container ship Vela Nova in the Gulf of Oman after accusing the vessel of violating transit restrictions. Meanwhile, Houthi forces launched fresh attacks on Yemen's Al Makha port and struck a merchant vessel in the Bab el-Mandeb strait, leaving four crew members dead.
Diplomatic strains have also intensified between Washington and Israel after the White House criticised Israeli plans to retain forces in southern Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza following statements by Defence Minister Israel Katz ruling out withdrawals.
