Persistent drought in the Netherlands triggers major wildfires in Limburg and forces key shipping locks to close, depleting freshwater reserves.
Emergency crews in the Netherlands continue to battle wildfires as persistent drought causes expanding infrastructure and shipping disruptions. A major fire in Limburg's Boschhuizerbergen nature reserve near Oostrum spread across roughly 100 hectares, forcing camping site evacuations, while a separate blaze in Rosmalen, North Brabant, was brought under control.
Simultaneously, low water levels forced authorities to close critical shipping infrastructure, including Rotterdam’s Park Locks and the Eefde lock, halting freight traffic along key canals. Water management officials noted that while past infrastructure investments and freshwater buffers previously mitigated severe impacts, available emergency reserves are now exhausted. Officials warn that prolonged dry conditions will continue to pressure the national economy, shipping sector, and local ecosystems.
