Volkswagen's board has approved a major restructuring strategy cutting 50,000 jobs globally as European vehicle manufacturing contracts.

Volkswagen’s supervisory board has unanimously approved "Zukunftsplan 2030," launching a major restructuring program to address declining European car demand and rising competition. European automotive production has dropped from 22 million vehicles in 2017 to roughly 16 million today, prompting German automakers to implement strict cost-cutting measures.

Under the agreed strategy, Volkswagen plans to reduce approximately 50,000 jobs globally, including executive roles, and evaluate alternative uses for four German production facilities in Emden, Zwickau, Hannover, and Neckarsulm due to uncompetitive output outlooks starting in 2031.

While supervisory members and labor representatives ultimately agreed to the plan, analysts note that the restructuring fundamentally reshapes Europe's largest automaker.
