US launches economic offensive against Iran amid Hormuz blockade
The United States has escalated economic measures against Iran, prompting warnings from Tehran against cooperating regional neighbours as the Strait of Hormuz blockade persists.
The United States has initiated a sweeping economic campaign against Iran following stalled diplomatic negotiations, with President Donald Trump pledging unprecedented measures to isolate Tehran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced forthcoming enforcement mechanisms, warning international entities against assisting the Islamic Republic.
In response, Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, warned that Tehran would retaliate forcefully and target the interests of regional neighbours cooperating with Washington's financial measures.
Simultaneously, Iranian forces maintain a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran continues to reject proposals limited to reopening the strategic waterway, instead demanding full implementation of a 14-point memorandum negotiated in June. The framework requires the complete removal of sanctions, the unfreezing of overseas Iranian assets, and an end to maritime restrictions on Iranian ports.
