US intensifies economic measures against Iran amid threats over Strait of Hormuz
The US is expanding economic sanctions against Iran, while Tehran threatens regional neighbours cooperating with Washington and maintains its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
The United States is escalating economic pressure against Iran following a deadlock in negotiations, with President Donald Trump announcing extensive measures aimed at total financial isolation. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to unveil further enforcement mechanisms targeting both Tehran and third-party nations assisting the Iranian economy.
In response, Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, warned that Iranian forces will target the regional interests of any neighbouring states cooperating with Washington's financial campaign.
Simultaneously, Iranian authorities continue to maintain their blockade of the Strait of Hormuz as strategic leverage. Tehran has rebuffed proposals aimed solely at restoring maritime transit, demanding full adherence to a 14-point memorandum drafted in June. Iranian terms require broad sanctions relief, the unfreezing of overseas assets, and the lifting of maritime restrictions on Iranian ports before normal shipping traffic can resume.
