US and Iran exchange strikes near Strait of Hormuz as regional tensions rise
US and Iranian forces exchange naval and missile strikes near the Strait of Hormuz amid warnings from intelligence officials of further conflict escalation.
Tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate near the Strait of Hormuz following a series of military engagements. US Central Command reported destroying five vessels belonging to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after an attempted assault on American naval ships. In response, Iranian state media claimed Tehran launched 20 missiles targeting US military installations in Jordan and struck six maritime vessels, including three tankers and an aircraft carrier. Emergency crews successfully extinguished a fire aboard one hit tanker.
Despite the clashes, US President Donald Trump asserted that transit through the Strait of Hormuz remains operational and stated that Tehran is in severe difficulty. However, US intelligence agencies warned that Iranian forces may seek to further intensify the regional conflict.
