UN reaches baseline agreement on autonomous weapons as military AI adoption grows

128 nations have agreed on a definition for autonomous weapon systems, while Germany, Ukraine, and NATO advance operational military AI capabilities.
In Geneva, 128 nations have agreed on a formal definition for autonomous weapon systems, marking a baseline step toward potential international regulation. The agreement comes alongside joint warnings from the United Nations and the International Red Cross against machines autonomously targeting human subjects.
Meanwhile, military AI integration continues to expand. Germany’s Ministry of Defence confirmed that semi-autonomous systems may execute operational tasks without human involvement in every phase, provided commanders retain ultimate authority over force deployment. Germany also rejected adopting analytics software from US vendor Palantir, opting to build an internal alternative.
Concurrently, Ukraine and NATO have jointly developed AI models to forecast hostile drone trajectories and streamline artillery targeting in active operations.
