Convicted Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladić has died in Hague detention at 83, sparking regional debate over planned state burial honors.

Former Bosnian Serb military commander Ratko Mladić has died at the age of 83 in Hague custody while serving a life sentence for genocide and war crimes. Mladić had been receiving palliative care in a prison hospital following the rejection of numerous requests by his family and Serbian authorities for temporary release on medical grounds.

Following his death, Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujić announced that Mladić would be buried with full state honors. Regional political figures and civic groups responded by emphasizing that his passing does not diminish or alter the legal verdicts rendered by international tribunals. Mladić was convicted by the tribunal for the 1995 Srebrenica genocide, the terror campaign against Sarajevo, and crimes against humanity during the Bosnian War.
