Police intervene in Polish court dispute after judge suspends top leadership

Police entered Poland's Constitutional Tribunal after a senior judge suspended the court's leadership and the government moved to strip their immunity.
A political and legal dispute has erupted over Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal after Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska suspended the court's president, Bogdan Święczkowski, and vice-president, Bartłomiej Sochański, for one month.
Invoking a state of constitutional necessity, Korwin-Piotrowska asserted her authority as the tribunal's most senior magistrate to assume temporary leadership. She accused the leadership of obstructing parliamentary-appointed judges and violating rules for assigning judicial panels. Following her orders, Warsaw police officers entered the tribunal grounds.
Concurrently, Polish Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek requested that immunity be lifted for both Święczkowski and Sochański to allow prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against them.
