Olivier Faure and Fabien Roussel join French 2027 presidential race
French Socialist Party chief Olivier Faure and Communist leader Fabien Roussel have officially entered the 2027 presidential race.
Socialist Party First Secretary Olivier Faure has officially confirmed his candidacy for the 2027 French presidential election, seeking nomination through a joint left-wing primary with Place Publique. Speaking during a television broadcast on Sunday evening, Faure finalized a decision previously shared with Socialist lawmakers.
His announcement follows Place Publique founder Raphaël Glucksmann's candidacy declaration a week earlier. Glucksmann welcomed Faure's decision, describing it as a helpful step toward political clarification for social-democratic voters.
Concurrently, French Communist Party national secretary Fabien Roussel formally launched his second presidential bid following an internal party vote where 72% of members supported his nomination. Roussel previously ran in 2022. The early announcements highlight early positioning across France's left-wing landscape.
