Moldova and Romania advance education wage updates amid union and budget concerns

Education salary reforms advance in Moldova and Romania with interim stipends and draft wage laws, though unions and analysts warn of limited financial gains.
In Moldova, the Ministry of Education clarified that staff across the education sector will receive monthly interim stipends of 1,000 lei net until a unified salary law takes effect on January 1, 2027. However, trade unions described recent interim payouts and planned 5–15% adjustments as a "provisional and partial" response that fails to fulfill employee demands.
In Romania, the latest draft of the unitary wage law sets a lower public sector reference value of 4,000 lei beginning December 2026. Although position coefficients for entry-level pre-university teachers will increase, economic analysts stress that budget constraints covering 300,000 staff will restrict overall salary growth. Additionally, managerial and research roles face lowered coefficients under the revised text.
