Middle East maritime standoff intensifies amid diplomatic disputes over Hormuz and Lebanon
Maritime clashes and stalled US-Iran negotiations continue to disrupt key regional waterways, alongside growing diplomatic tensions between Washington and Israel over territorial withdrawals.
Tensions across key Middle Eastern waterways remain elevated as diplomatic discussions between Washington and Tehran remain stalled over the implementation of a June memorandum. Iranian authorities continue to link the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to sanctions relief and the unfreezing of assets, while US President Donald Trump claimed American forces maintain control over the waterway.
At sea, military actions have escalated across regional choke points. US forces struck the container ship Vela Nova in the Gulf of Oman for attempting to bypass transit controls. Meanwhile, fatal Houthi attacks in the Bab el-Mandeb strait and strikes on Yemen's Al Makha port resulted in four maritime casualties.
Diplomatic strains have also surfaced between Washington and Tel Aviv following White House criticism of statements by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, who ruled out troop withdrawals from southern Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza.
