High-speed train collision in Toledo leaves dozens dead as rescue efforts continue

Rescue teams and military personnel deploy in Toledo following a deadly rear-end collision between an AVE and an Iryo high-speed train.
Emergency crews in Spain, including over 100 members of the Military Emergencies Unit (UME), are conducting search and rescue operations near Urda and Los Yébenes following a severe high-speed train collision. An AVE train carrying 397 passengers struck a stationary Iryo train with 146 people aboard from behind on the Madrid-Andalusia corridor.
Casualty estimates vary across reporting, with death tolls ranging between 46 and at least 64 fatalities, alongside nearly 150 injured passengers. Castilla-La Mancha Regional President Emiliano García-Page cautioned that officials "expect more fatalities" as teams clear the wreckage.
The disaster has intensified political scrutiny directed at Transport Minister Óscar Puente. Criticism revived previous remarks in which he stated "the probability of another accident is extremely low," following a fatal rail crash nine months prior.
