French high schools switch to remote learning amid escalating protests

French authorities order hundreds of high schools to adopt remote learning following arson attacks, transit disruptions, and escalating student blockades.
French authorities have ordered between 400 and 500 high schools to transition to remote instruction as student blockades escalate across the country. Education Minister Édouard Geffray stated that at least 24 schools suffered severe damage or arson, including a fire that destroyed the entrance of Nelson Mandela High School in Nantes. Addressing the situation, Geffray condemned the destruction as an "entreprise de destruction du service public de l’éducation."
In response to the violence and widespread transit disruptions in Marseille and Strasbourg, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened an interministerial crisis meeting at the Interior Ministry. Government officials warned that the demonstrations have turned into "violences urbaines." Meanwhile, student organizations and teacher unions maintain their calls for nationwide strikes on Tuesday to demand increased funding and prompt staff replacements.
