Record temperatures and low river levels across Europe are forcing power plant curtailments, driving up energy prices, and sparking a tourism boom in alpine regions.

Severe heatwaves across Southern and Central Europe have strained regional energy infrastructure while altering seasonal travel patterns. High temperatures and declining river levels, notably along the Po and Danube, forced capacity reductions or shutdowns at nuclear and gas-fired power plants in Italy, France, Hungary, and Romania.

In Italy, low water levels led to the detachment of gas plants along the Po River, driving electricity prices to a three-and-a-half-year high. Romania deployed military intervention to clear the Danube riverbed and maintain cooling operations for its Cernavodă nuclear facility, while Hungary instituted power restrictions affecting industrial manufacturers.

Concurrently, extreme weather has shifted travel choices. Italian alpine destinations reported a 14.4% increase in tourist arrivals as visitors sought relief in higher altitudes.
