Record-low water levels on major European rivers like the Danube and Rhine threaten regional energy generation, cargo navigation, and economic stability.

Historic droughts and persistent heatwaves across Europe have driven water levels on critical waterways to unprecedented lows, threatening regional commerce and power generation.

Along the Danube, entry point measurements at Bezdan on the Croatian-Serbian border recorded a historic minimum of -163 centimeters on August 3, surpassing a record set in 1909. Authorities across Central and Southeastern Europe warn that reduced river flow severely impacts hydroelectric production and cooling capabilities for power facilities. Meanwhile, navigation restrictions on both the Rhine and Danube continue to disrupt essential cargo transit.

Monitoring agencies indicate that without significant rainfall, prolonged low water levels will heighten economic risks and energy supply strains across the continent.
