Severe heatwave conditions continue across Europe, driving infrastructure emergency measures in Romania and boosting mountain tourism in Italy.

The severe heatwave gripping southern and central Europe has prompted maximum health alerts across Italy, where 25 of 27 monitored cities remain under red alerts through Wednesday. Temperatures exceeding 40°C, combined with intense humidity, are expected to persist until at least August 9 before relief arrives.

The prolonged drought and extreme weather are straining European infrastructure, causing estimated damages of €3 billion across the continent. In Romania, military forces detonated underwater rock formations along the Danube to redirect river currents, ensuring sufficient cooling water reached the Cernavodă nuclear power facility.

Meanwhile, the sustained high temperatures are altering domestic travel trends in Italy. Alpine and high-altitude destinations recorded a 14.4% rise in summer visitor arrivals, totaling nearly 7.8 million people seeking refuge from urban heat.
