Efforts to reopen Strait of Hormuz continue amid conflicting signs from Washington and Tehran
Diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz face mixed signals as the US expresses optimism while Tehran denies direct talks and faces new financial demands.
Efforts to restore maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz remain uncertain as diplomatic signals diverge. American officials expressed hope that an agreement to reopen the strategic waterway could be reached within days, with Qatari mediators confirming ongoing discussions. However, Tehran denied engaging in direct negotiations with Washington.
Complicating prospects for a quick resolution, US President Donald Trump stated that Washington will demand financial compensation from Iran for casualties linked to Iranian-backed operations and domestic crackdowns over past decades.
Meanwhile, Iranian diplomatic spokesperson Esmaïl Baghaï announced that Iran and Oman have agreed on technical details for a revised maritime corridor, noting "the geographical coordinates of the route planned by both parties have been approved" provided third parties do not interfere.
