Dutch mental healthcare gaps highlighted following Rotterdam stabbings and cold case search

A Rotterdam stabbing suspect has entered psychiatric care amid warnings that 62,500 vulnerable Dutch patients lack institutional support, as police pursue a related cold case search.
Rotterdam police have transferred a 26-year-old suspect to psychiatric care after two men were injured during separate, unprovoked knife attacks, noting that the individual displayed uncomprehended behaviour.
The development coincides with broader concerns raised by the Dutch mental healthcare sector, which reports that approximately 62,500 people with severe psychiatric conditions remain outside institutional care networks. Sector representatives warned that vulnerable individuals frequently slip through administrative cracks during transitions between housing facilities, institutions, or support providers.
Separately, police divers conducted a search in Rotterdam's Ringvaartplas for the firearm used in the mistaken-identity murder of mental healthcare director Rob Zweekhorst following a tip. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any evidence was retrieved from the water.
