Dutch mental health system under scrutiny amid Rotterdam violence and cold case search

A Rotterdam stabbing suspect receives psychiatric care as Dutch mental health providers warn of large gaps in oversight, alongside a cold case search.
A 26-year-old man detained in connection with two random stabbings in Rotterdam has been transferred to specialized medical care after displaying what police described as misunderstood behaviour. The attacks, which left two people injured, come as mental healthcare organisations warn that approximately 62,500 individuals with severe psychological conditions across the Netherlands remain outside the reach of formal care systems. Industry representatives cautioned that vulnerable people frequently lose vital support when moving between residences, care providers, or administrative agencies.
In a separate development in Rotterdam, police divers conducted searches in the Ringvaartplas for a weapon connected to the 2014 mistaken-identity murder of mental healthcare director Rob Zweekhorst. Investigators have not confirmed whether any evidence was recovered from the water.
