Dutch authorities address mental health crisis following Rotterdam stabbings

Dutch authorities placed a Rotterdam stabbing suspect in psychiatric care amid broader warnings that 62,500 vulnerable mental health patients lack adequate institutional oversight.
Dutch authorities have transferred a 26-year-old suspect to a psychiatric facility following two unprovoked stabbings in Rotterdam that left two people injured. Police reported that the assailant exhibited misunderstood behaviour during the attacks.
The incident coincides with wider concerns raised by the Dutch mental healthcare sector, which warns that an estimated 62,500 individuals suffering from severe psychological conditions remain outside institutional care. Sector leaders cautioned that patients frequently lose vital support during transitions between care institutions, residences, or administrative bodies.
Meanwhile, Rotterdam police divers have conducted underwater searches in the Ringvaartplas for the firearm used in the 2014 mistaken-identity killing of mental healthcare director Rob Zweekhorst. Authorities have not confirmed whether the search recovered the weapon.
