Former Italian PM Giuseppe Conte defended his pandemic response before a parliamentary inquiry, denying wrongdoing and submitting mask procurement files to prosecutors.

Former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte defended his government’s management of the COVID-19 pandemic during a parliamentary commission hearing in Rome. The Five Star Movement leader rejected accusations of wrongdoing, insisting that all decisions made during his tenure were lawful and aimed at protecting public health.

Addressing lawmakers during a session that lasted over three hours, Conte stated that he had submitted an anonymous document to Rome prosecutors regarding a 100-million-euro procurement contract for face masks involving JC Electronics. He called for a thorough investigation into potential irregularities, denying any personal illegality.

The inquiry commission, established by the ruling right-wing majority, has faced criticism from opposition parties, who view it as a politically motivated venue. Conte defended Italy's initial containment measures, urging commission members to maintain impartiality.
