Bulgaria attributed a recent drone explosion near a gas pipeline to Ukrainian forces, while intensified Russian strikes in eastern Ukraine pushed July civilian casualties to record levels.

Bulgarian military officials confirmed that debris from a drone explosion near a Trans-Balkan gas pipeline station likely belonged to Ukrainian forces. Officials stated the incident appeared accidental after the aircraft crossed into Bulgarian airspace from Romania. Kyiv denied targeting Bulgarian infrastructure and reiterated its commitment to a joint investigation with Sofia.

Concurrently, Russian artillery and air attacks across eastern Ukraine resulted in at least three civilian fatalities and nine injuries. The strikes caused severe infrastructure damage, leaving roughly 99,000 residents in Chernihiv Oblast without electricity. Heavy shelling in Donetsk Oblast has also drastically depopulated the frontline town of Druzhkivka. United Nations figures indicate that escalated long-range attacks made July 2024 the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since April 2022.
