Australian independent lawmaker Helen Haines remains in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle outside her electoral office in Wangaratta, Victoria, on Monday afternoon.
The 65-year-old MP for Indi was transferred to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital, where she underwent surgery overnight. Authorities arrested a 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee at the scene after a passerby detained him. Victoria Police confirmed officers located a knife inside the suspect's vehicle.
State police, the Australian Federal Police, and security agency ASIO are jointly investigating the incident as a potential deliberate attack. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese indicated a counter-terrorism taskforce is involved, noting that while the motive remains unclear, rising political rhetoric online has raised safety concerns.
